Kotagill

(Glen Kotagil, Kotagill Canyon)

Kotagil is a savage gorge in the North of Iceland, not far from Varmahlíð. Here the river Kotá tries to find its way through a narrow gorge. The water drops down over 35 meters before it later ends in the river Norðura.

Kotagil gorge lies not far below the farm Fremra – Kot. It is easy to walk into the gorge from road 1. In the gorge you will find fossils particularly fossilised parts of trees.

Coming from Varmahlíð in Skagafjörður driving on road 1 it is on your left. There is a sign with the name Kotá by the road but you have to keep your eyes open. There is a parking lot and from here you can follow the river.

West of Kotugil there is another beautiful gorge with a waterfall of appr. 140 m, Bólugil canyon.
