Osfossen

Osfossen is a powerful waterfall in the river Gaula near Bygstadt (Gaular) in the region Sogn og Fjordane.

Osfossen-parkingOsfossen is easy to reach and is situated at the junction of road Fv57, Fv422 and Fv610, 11 kilometer east of Bygstad. There is a small parking, near the bridge, at the top of Osfossen. From the bridge Osfossen isn’t very spectaculair bit you can walk down.

There is no official path, so you have to be a little bit careful. Walking down there a sort of stone wall from where you have a great view and where you can feel the power of Osfossen. A little bit further down you can wak (find your way) to the river Gaula.

Her you have a great view on the  river Gaula plunging down 10 meters over a wide of 30-40 meter. I visited Osfossen July 2017 and the river Gaula was very powerful. It was late in the afternoon and the sun reflected nice on the white water. I think you can see how powerful Osfossen is.

The oldest salmon ladder, built in 1870, is on the south side of the Osfossen. The salmon ladder is probably the third oldest salmon ladder in the world.

Gaular is sometimes referred to as Fosselandet (the land of the waterfalls) because it is home to 28 large and small waterfalls. The waterfall road is the stretch from Gaularfjell mountains and Haukedalen along the watercourse down through Viksdalen to Sande and Bygstad. There is also a waterfall walk along the river Gaular. The waterfall walk goes from the Gaular mountains down to Viksdalen. Along its route there are 14 waterfalls and 7 lakes. It is a relatively easy hike with a height difference of approx. 500m and a total length of 21 km. The hike goes from Gaularfjell to Viksdalen via Eldal, Likholefossen, Longstølen and Torsnesstølen.

Huldefossen, HuldrefossenMany of the waterfalls are situated near or next to the road and you are able to drive right up to 29 of these waterfalls. Not all of these 29 waterfalls are very spectacular but the biggest waterfall is without a doubt Huldefossen.

A waterfall people often forget is the 150 meter high Laukelandsfossen near Dale (along the Dalsfjorden), 24 kilometer west of Osfossen. This waterfall is really a visit worthwhile and belongs to the most beautiful waterfalls of Norway.
