Aedarfossar

(Æðarfossar, Eider falls)

Æðarfossar is a small waterfall, 9 km south of Husavik, not far from road 85. When driving from Husavik on road 85 to the west there is a small road Laxamýrarvegur (before you cross the river) heading to the waterfall. Although it isn’t a very high waterfall it certainly is very photogenic.

The river Laxa cascades down with a height difference of 3 meters, 2 kilometers before it flows into the sea. The Laxá is very rich and popular fishing river and runs from Lake Mývatn to Skjálfandi (Bay), with some of the largest brown trout in the country.

The farm on the way to Æðafossar has family ties to Magnus Magnusson, the late presenter of the BBC quiz show with the spinning black chairs, Mastermind. So a young Magnus may well have cavorted around the banks near the falls before he left for Scotland. A little before Magnus arrived, Jóhann Sigurjónsson, a famous Icelandic poet and playwright was also part of the family and lived here at the turn of the century.\n\n
