Grey Mare Waterfall

(Grey Mare's Tail waterfall)

Grey Mare's Tail waterfallGrey Mare Waterfall is a gorgeous waterfall in Grey Mares Tail Nature Reserve, along road A708. The reserve is located between Moffat and Dryhope near Birkhill in Scotland (United Kingdom).

There is a large car park (£3) along road A708, with a small visitor centre. From the Grey Mares Tail Nature Reserve car park you have two options:
1.) In only 10-15 minutes there is a short walk to the base of the waterfall with a nice view on the Grey Mare waterfall
2.) You can also decide to walk to the top of the Grey Mare waterfall. From the parking cross the river right in the beginning of the trail that is heading up the hill at the right side of the waterfall. The trail runs to the top but you also can walk further to loch Skeen. A nice walk if you have enough time.

The magnificent Grey Mare Waterfall which plunges down over 60 meter (two major steps) from Loch Skeen and continues its way into Moffat water.

The valley was scoured out by glaciers during the last ice age and  must rank amongst the most impressive in Scotland. They were celebrated in verse by Sir Walter Scott.
