Hangandifoss

Hangandifoss is a waterfall in the south of Iceland in the Múlagljúfur canyon. There are several waterfalls to be found, here you will see the Múlafoss and Hangandifoss. If I look at the picture, this is really heaven and next time I am going to Iceland I definitely visit Múlagljúfur canyon.

Hangandifoss (on the right side) has a single drop of appr. 110 meters, but if you count in the lower part which goes to the river, then it will be 130 meters.  Hangandifoss can be seen from a far distance!

The river Múlaa is fed by the melting water of the Öræfajökull. Öræfajökull is an ice-covered volcano, at the southern extremity of the Vatnajökull glacier and overlooking the Ring Road between Höfn and Vík. It is the largest active volcano in the country and on the summit crater’s north-western rim is Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest peak in Iceland at 2,110 meters. Geographically Öræfajökull is considered part of Vatnajökull and the area covered by glacier is within the boundary of Vatnajökull National Park.

Múlagljúfur canyon is 14 kilometers southwest of Jökulsárlón. From road 1 there is a trail starting (63° 59.320’N, 16° 23.704’W) which goes directly to Múlagljúfur canyon. It is 2,5 kilometer walk and will take an hour. I am not sure if you can walk further on, the trail ends at the beginning of Múlagljúfur canyon.
