Triberger Wasserfälle

I think the Triberger Wasserfälle are the most visited waterfalls in Germany and is a main attraction in the region Baden-Württemburg. There is a train station and a tourist train runs through Triberg with its many restaurants and hotels.

Nevertheless the Triberger Wasserfälle are a visit worthwhile. The river Gutach drops down over 7 main stages and a trail, with several view points, is running along the river. At night the waterfalls are illuminated and can be visited for free. At least that was so in April, I don’t know if you have to pay admission in summertime.

Don’t expect to much of the illumination. Only the lower part of the Triberger Wasserfälle is illuminated and just after sundown the effect is nice to see. When it gets really dark I did’t liked the orange light on the waterfall to much.

Often the Triberger Wasserfälle has been called the highest waterfall in Germany (Deutschlands höchste Wasserfälle) but there are many other waterfalls in Germany that are much taller. The highest waterfall in Germany is the Seebach waterfall in the Oytal, Bayern.

Triberger-wasserfalle-entrance, Schwarzwald, GermanyThere are several parkings near the entrance of the Triberger Wasserfälle that can be reached in 2-3 minutes. Big disadvantage of such a circus is that you have to pay for entering the waterfall and for the parking.

April 2017 I had a week off and I decided to go to the Schwarzwald, in Germany, for a few days chasing waterfalls. Although I live in the Netherlands next to Germany, it was a five hour drive to get here. I booked a room in the Best Western hotel near the centre. This has two big benefits; you receive a customer card (free entrance to the waterfall) and the parking at the hotel is for free.

Triberger-wasserfalle-viewpoint, Schwarzwald, GermanyAlthough I liked the Triberger Wasserfälle more then the Allerheiligen Wasserfälle I visited just before, they didn’t impress me very much. Maybe also because I had big expectations. The first waterfall (more a  serie of cascades) is also the biggest drop and nice to see. I regret that the platforms and viewpoints are sometimes to much visible. It is better that they naturally merge in their environment.

Within 20 minutes you can reach the top of the Triberger Wasserfälle, but I took much time photographing the several stages experimenting with several setting on Nikon D750. I think I like most of the results.

I also went to the Allerheiligen wasserfälle and the unknown Burgbach wasserfall, both nearby and easy to reach. To be honest I liked the Burgbach wasserfall most because it has a single drop of 32 meter, is situated in the dark woods of the Schwarzwald and is very photogenic.

During my three day visit of the Schwarzwald I also made a trip to Switzerland to one of the most powerful waterfalls on the main land of Europe, the Rheinfall. From the Schwarzwald it only a 1-1,5 hour drive and if you exit road 4 before Schaffhausen (exit 2) you don’t have to buy a vignet (over 40 euro). When I was at the Rheinfall the volume was reaching the amount of 275.000 liter/sec. In summertime the volume doubles.
