Njupeskär

(Njupeskärsfallet)

Njupeskär is the highest waterfall in Sweden with a single drop of 70 meters and a total height of 125 meters.

Njupeskär is located 20 kilometer west of Särna in Fulufjället national park, not far from the border with Norway. From Särna drive west to Mörkret. On the way you will see a sign pointing left to Njupeskär (6 kilometer). There is a big parking and a restaurant at the end.

The are several trails to Njupeskär which are well marked. There is a trail of 4 kilometer (Njupeskärsslingan), that is easy that leads to the bottom of Njupeskär. There is also a longer and more diificult trail called Fallet runt (5,5 km) that leads to the bottom and a higher viewpoint.

Fulufjället national park is only open from june to september!

We have just returned from a visit to Sweden where we managed to fit in a trip to Njupeskär waterfall. We chose to hike the 4km from the parking area to the falls in extremely deep snow with the temperature at -18 degrees. It was a perfect winter wonderland with the spruce trees shrouded in a coat of sparkly white. Thankfully we had picked a day when the sun was shining which made the walk even more spectacular. We could only get to within 200-300 metres of the frozen falls as the snow had been so considerable in recent days that there was an avalanche warning in place. This was only a minor inconvenience as the walk and the experience in general was absolutely perfect. We only saw 3 other people in the 2.5 hours that we were there. It is nice to know that there are still places where you can enjoy nature in almost perfect isolation! I have also enjoyed these falls in summer which is of course a totally different but equally pleasing experience. If you happen to find yourself in the Dalarna region of Sweden, then you should definitely put the Njupeskär waterfall on your to-do list!
