Vatnsleysufoss

(Faxafoss, Faxi)

Vatnsleysufoss - FaxiVatnsleysufoss or Faxi (also called Faxafoss) is a very beautiful waterfall in the river Tungufljót near Reykholt in Iceland and is part of the Golden Circle.

From Selfoss take road 35 to Reykholt. After Reyholt it is another 7 kilometer before there is a small road to the right (gps 64.226613, -20.340184) heading to the Vatnsleysufoss (Faxi). There is a big board with “camping Faxi”. After the exit you can park your car at the parking.

Vatnsleysufoss (Faxi) is easy to reach and the parking is almost in front of the waterfall. Vatnsleysufoss (Faxi) is located in the river Tungufljót and plunges down over 7 meters, very impressive to see. Maybe not because of the height but the waterfall is almost 80 meters wide.

When we visited the area of the golden circle July 2011 we where very delighted to see Vatnsleysufoss (Faxi). Very nice to see and it gives some color to the endless landscape around the waterfall. At that time there was no admission for the waterfall but recently people posted that the admission was ISK 1.000…..

The river Tungufljót finds it origin in lake Sandvatnn and ends in the river Hvita, one of the major rivers of Iceland.

Vatnsleysufoss (Faxi) is named after the farm Vatnsleysa and means “shortage of water”.

There are so many hotspots nearby to visit in the golden circle, like geysir. But also the famous waterfall Gulfoss.
