Falls of Foyers
(Eas na Smùide, smoking falls)
The falls of Foyers is a 43 meter heigh single drop waterfall at the south side of Loch Ness, at the hamlet Foyers in Scotland (UK).
The waterfalls are easy to reach when driving (or searching for Nessie) at the south side of Loch Ness. There are big signs for the “falls of Foyers” parking, along the roadside. This is a small brand new (2023) made parking with a toilet. Unfortunately you have to pay for the parking (£2 in 2023). But nearby you can park for free where possible.
At the parking there is also a tourist shop and cafe. At the other side of the road there is the entrance to the trail (free). A well maintained path leads steeply down over forested slopes to a viewpoint overlooking the falls of Foyers, from the top. This is only a few minutes walk (appr. 5 minutes).
There is a better viewpoint when walking further down to the second viewpoint (3-5 minutes). Here you can se the single drop of the falls of Foyers dropping into a pool. Unfortunately there was hardly any water in the river Foyers. A week ago, when we where in Wales, the waterfalls where extremely powerful. Nevertheless it is a nice waterfall to visit and easy to reach, also for children. I have seen many picture of the falls of Foyers where there was much more water in the river…
If you want you can continue your walk to the lower falls of Foyer but I stopped. I didn’t found any interesting pictures to go further….
Afterwards you can explore Loch Ness at the beach of Dores, a few kilometers further north. A very nice place to go to with children: you can swim, there are several cafe’s or you can just enjoy the view and hope Nessie show up!
