Fureasfossen

(Vassbakkfossen, Brekkefossen)

Fureasfossen or Brekkefossen is one of the many big waterfalls in the surrounding of Skjolden, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.

Fureasfossen-Brekkefossen-campingFureasfossen (Brekkefossen) is located along road 55 just outside Skjolden on the way to Fortun. You can see this tall waterfall already when driving in Skjolden. From camping Nymoen at the Eidsvatnet you have a beautiful view on Fureasfossen (Brekkefossen). Late in the evening you have an almost surrealistic light on the two waterfalls (including Liingafossen) with the Eidsvatnet in the foreground.

Fureasfossen-Brekkefossen-cowAnother great view is at the base of Fureasfossen (Brekkefossen). You can park at Vassbakken Kro camping. I always love it when there are animals in the foreground of a waterfall. In summer several cows are walking in the meadow and are willing to be a cow model for a picture. You can walk along road 55 to view the waterfall from the left or right. Views can differ per viewing point.

Fureasfossen (Brekkefossen) has a single drop of 215 meter and is fed by the river Aselvi, which origin lies at the Nobbafjelli on a height of 1.508 meter. Fureasfossen (Brekkefossen) itself has a total height of about 460 meter.

I am not really sure where the name Brekkefossen comes from but Fureas (Furåsen) is a former farm that was abandoned in 1990. Furåsen means Pine Hill or Pine Ridge. Before 1700 the name was Preståsen (Parson Hill), and was owned by the church.

I visited Fureasfossen (Brekkefossen) twice. Once in June years ago and in July 2017. I love the Lusterfjord area because of the many major waterfalls close to each other.

Other great waterfalls close by are  Drivandefossen and Feigefossen.

Thank you so much for your wonderful information and pictures! We also love waterfalls, and we’re visiting Norway for the first time starting tonight! We won’t have as much time as you, but we will be driving in the Lusterfjord area soon and we will be sure to see as many falls as we can. Your guides are very detailed and I have printed them out.
