Oxararfoss, Thingvellir National ParkThe Öxarárfoss, located in Þingvellir National Park in southwest Iceland, is an impressive and unique waterfall. Formed by the Öxará river, the Öxarárfoss is one of the more spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It is a great place to visit and explore, as the surrounding area is rich with natural beauty and interesting history.

The waterfall (in Thingvellir National Park) is easy to reach and is a popular daytour from Reykjavik. There are several parkings but from the main parking (gps 64.264736, -21.114326) it is a 5 minute walk to the waterfall.  It is a nice and pleasant walk along  all kinds of basalt rock formations

The Öxarárfoss is approximately 14 meters high. Its powerful cascading waters are a truly beautiful sight to behold. It is especially picturesque during the summer months when the sun is out and the water is glistening. The waterfall is also a popular spot for swimming in the warmer months.

The area around the Öxarárfoss is steeped in history and culture. It was the site of the Alþingi, or the Icelandic Parliament, which is the oldest existing parliament in the world. The Öxarárfoss was also the site of the signing of the Icelandic Constitution in the year 930.

Þingvellir, or Thingvellir, is an area of incredible natural beauty located in southwestern Iceland. It is one of the most important sites in Iceland, both historically and geologically, and it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The area is located in the rift valley of the Þingvallavatn lake, which is the largest natural lake in Iceland.

The park is located in the Þingvallavatn watershed, which is the source of some of the countrys most important rivers. Historically, Þingvellir has been the site of the Alþingi, the national assembly of Iceland, since the 10th century. The Alþingi was an important political and cultural event for the Icelandic people and it is still held at Þingvellir every year. Geologically, Þingvellir is an area of great importance. It is located on the MidAtlantic ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling away from each other.

This geological activity can be seen in the form of fissures and faults throughout the area, as well as the spectacular Silfra fissure, which is a popular destination for snorkeling and diving. In addition to its historical and geological significance, Þingvellir is also a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by horseback, take part in various water sports on the lake, or simply take in the stunning views.
