Selvadsfoss

(Selvaðsfoss)

Selvaðsfoss is a waterfall in the south of Iceland near Skogar along road 1 near the more know Kvernufoss. Selvaðsfoss is located 2 km Northeast of Skógar, Northeast of the Skógar Museum there is an old track going to the fall, see here. The waterfall should be quite high (40 meters), but I can’t find any pictures of the Selvaðsfoss….

There is also a possibility to walk via Kvernugil in 1,5 hours. Kvernugil is a ravine in Skógar, 500m east of the Skógar Folk Museum.  There is a route that leads to Fimmvörðuháls that can be used.

The river Kverna runs form the Skógaheiði area and drops down over 40 meters. To view the waterfall you need to walk about 2 kilometers from Skógar. The surrounding is beautiful and worthwhile to visit.

The river Kverna has its origins in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and flows over the edge of a cliff that was once the former coastline of Iceland and falls into a small gap down. After the last ice the coastline had retired by the upward rise of Iceland which formed the cliffs that are the boundary between the lowlands and the highlands.

The southern region, specially near Skógar is famous because the many waterfalls short to each other. About 1 kilometer to the west lies the more famous Skógafoss waterfall.

Named waterfalls in the region of Skógar are: Skógafoss, Miðfoss, Neðstifoss, Kvernufoss, SellfossDalárfoss, Skálabrekkufoss, Kæfufoss, Gluggafoss, Rollutorfufoss, Fellsfoss, Steinbogafoss, Fosstorfufoss, Hestavaðsfoss and Holtsárfoss.
