Trümmelbachfälle

Trümmelbachfälle is an exceptional gorgeous waterfall in a cave, just outside the village Lauterbrunnen, in the region Berner Oberland, Switzerland.

Driving from Interlaken to the Lauterbrunnen tal (valley) you can’t miss the Staubbachfall. Already from a far distance you can see the Staubbachfall plunging down over the cliff at the right side of the Lauterbrunnen valley. Two kilometer after Lauterbrunnen you can’t miss the signs for the  Trümmelbachfälle. There are parking spots at the left and right side of the road and in summertime it can get somewhat crowded.

Trummelbachfalle-signAfter parking the car you have to pay admission (11 chf) to enter the cave with the Trümmelbachfälle. The Trümmelbachfälle are a series of ten glacier-waterfalls inside the mountain made accessible by tunnel-lift and an illuminated path. In summertime the volume of the waterfall is appr 20m3/sec, quite a lot.

The Trümmelbachfälle is being with melted snow and ice from the glaciers above the waterfall: Giesengletsjer, Guggigletscher and Eigergletscher. These are all glacier located at the north/northwest side of one of the highest mountains in Switzerland, the Jungfrau (4.158m).

Best season to visit the waterfall is early summer with warm weather or in summertime. Because there is hardly any daylight coming in the cave, midday would be the best time to visit the Trümmelbachfälle.

There aren’t so many waterfalls like this. The shape of the rocks, that the plunges down in a cave and the illumination makes the Trümmelbachfälle very special and a must to visit.

The height according to several sources on the Internet is 140 meters but when looking at the map I think it is a little bit higher, around 200 meters.

Undoubtedly the Lauterbrunnen valley is the number 1 valley for waterfalls in Switzerland. Lauterbrunnen means “only sources” which refers to the meany streams coming down the mountains. There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley from which Staubbachfall and Trummelbachfall (in a cave) are the most famous ones.

Also the highest waterfall in Switzerland are located in the Lauterbrunnen valley: SpissbachfallStaldenbachfallMürrenbachfall and Staubbachfall.

In the Lauterbrunnen valley there are many other waterfalls (72) but my favorite are: SefinefallTalbachfallHoldrifalleSchmadribachfall (tip), SpissbachfallMürrenbachfall.

Besides chasing waterfalls the Lauterbrunnen valley is a perfect base for hikes, paragliding or skydiving. The year 2005 was the last time I was in the Lauterbrunnen valley and the pictures I took where still analog. Visiting Switzerland again stands high on my wishlist but Switzerland is also the most expensive country in Europe. Nevertheless it is also one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.
