Fagrifoss is waterfall situated in Southeast Iceland near the Lakagígar region and means pretty falls. Although Fagrifoss isn’t easy to reach it is certainly a top 10 waterfall in Iceland and one of the most beautiful falls to photograph. Especially the shape of Fragrifoss is unique and gorgeous. Like a bridal veil the water slopes down over the rocks.
The glacier river Geirlandsá plunges down over appr 80 meters in a beautiful mossy scene near Laki. Here was a massive eruption in 1783-1784 where the earth tore over a length of 24 km and created 120 craters where lava over 560 square kilometers was flooded.
The waterfall can be found along road F206 on the way to Laki and the road is rugged with rivers that can be treacherous to cross if the water level rises due to lots of rain and warm weather. It is only possible to drive top Fragrifoss with a 4WD.
Driving west ofKirkjubæjarklaustur on road 1 (near Systrastapi) take the small road F206 (Lakavegur) to Laki and follow the road for 20 kilometers. You will drive past Fagrifoss.
The view of the waterfall is best from the east side but a bit of a hike is necessary in order to get a good view.
