Stjornarfoss
(Stjórnarfoss)
Stjórnarfoss was the surprise of our visit to Iceland years ago. This picturesque waterfall is located along ring road 1 near Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the south of Iceland.
When driving from Vík í Mýrdal to the east, Stjórnarfoss is located just near Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the beautiful Systrafoss. At the roundabout (and gasstation) go straight ahead following the sign Geirland. After 1 kilometer you cross a bridge near the camping site Tjaldsvæðið Kleifar. Here there is a parking at the right side of the road.
Walk back to the bridge and follow the river upstream. You can’t miss this gorgeous waterfall. Although it isn’t a very big waterfall it is certainly one of the more photogenic waterfalls in Iceland. After a few minutes you have reached the base of the Stjórnarfoss.
This location could be the set of a movie. A beautiful location in even more gorgeous surrounding and an even nicer waterfall: the shape, the rock formation and the surrounding makes this one of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland.
There are several beautiful waterfalls in the southern parts of Iceland. In Kirkjubæjarklaustur you can find the Systrafoss and a little more east, following ring road 1, you can find Foss a Sidu. For all waterfalls in Iceland visit my main page about waterfalls in Iceland.
