Kjosfossen

Kjosfossen, Myrdal/Flam, Sogn og FjordaneKjosfossen is a big and very powerful waterfall between Flåm and Myrdal in the region Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.

The only way to visit this enormous waterfall is by train (Flåmsbana). The Flåm railway (Flåmsbana) in one of the main tourist attractions in Norway and tickets are very popular. It is wise to book tickets in advance, certainly in the high season.

When departing from Flåm I prefer to sit at the right side of the train. The first part of the train ride is friendly but soon the train starts ascending.

The Flåm railway (Flåmsbana) is a popular tourist attraction where the train brings you from Flåm to Myrdal. With a height difference of 865 meter within 20 kilometers, it is the second steepest railway in the world. On the way you can enjoy the beautiful scenery with lots of waterfalls, named and unnamed.

The first waterfall you pass is Brekkefossen, on the right. The next, a little bit further (also on the right) is Rjoandefossen, the one with the nicest colors in the most beautiful landscape. Near station Berekvam you will see several waterfalls on the left, the biggest (unofficial named) one is Tunnshello. Then you will pass Kardalsfossen, not very clear visible.

Kjosfossen is one of the last stop before arriving at Myrdal. The train stops at a platform right in front of Kjosfossen. During the main season a show is performed at Kjosfossen:  a girl is dressed as Huldra (a seductive forest creature) and dances at the waterfall. It is a quite touristic act but still nice to see.

Kjosfossen belongs absolutely to the top 10 most beautiful waterfall in Norway. With a height of 93-225 meter and an enormous power of the water, Kjosfossen is a very impressive waterfall. One you shouldn’t miss.

After the stop at Kjosfossen the trains goes further up. You will see several water streamscoming down the mountain and at your right you will have a gorgeous view on Myrdalsfossen which plunges down over 225 meter.

The train ride is suitable for everyone, children, older people. At Myrdal there are a few things you can do. Most people take the same train back. It is more fun to rent a bike (in advance) and bike back. A very scenic route brings you back to Flåm. The ride is easy and most part of the track is down.

Another (cheap) option is to walk back to Flåm. The trail is very beautiful, especially the first half, but takes time. Although the trail is easy I was quite exhausted at the end. The hike from Myrdal to Flåm is a 20 kilometer walk and will take approximately 5 hours.
