Slettafossen

Slettafossen is an extremely powerful waterfall in the river Rauma in the Romsdalen and is located near Verma/Øverdalen, 40 kilometer south of Åndalsnes in the region More og Romsdal, Norway.

Slettafossen-signDriving on road E136, south of Verma, you will see a parking at the right side of the road at the sign “Slettafossen”. From the parking you can walk to a tourist shop and picnic area crossing a suspension bridge. On the bridge you have a good view on Slettafossen.

There is also a viewpoint that can be reached from the parking where you can see Slettafossen a little bit downstream. I also saw nice pictures of a viewpoint at the other side of the river (downstream) but I forgot to check it out… On the map I don’t see an official trail.

SlettafossenSlettafossen is located in a narrow gorge, 30-40 meter high, where the river Rauma tries to find its way through. The passage is narrow which makes Slettafossen extremely powerful. The river Rauma descent over 20 meter before it comes to rest 125 meter further downstream.

Best time to visit Slettafossen is from late spring to summer when there is a lot of snow melting or in a rainy period.

The average water flow at Slettafossen is 2,3 m3/s but certainly was higher when I was at Slettafossen July 2017. Because of a power plant  water of the river Rauma and Ulvaa is diverted resulting in a 40% lower volume then in earlier days. Probably the waterfall Slettafossen is why the river is named Rauma. Rauma is diverted from the word “raumr” which means something like thundering waterfall.

Since the 19the century there already was a bridge over Slettafossen and at the end of the 19th century the waterfall slowly was exploited for tourism. The bridge is rebuilt several times.

North of Slettafossen you can find another great waterfall, Vermafossen. Actually there are so many tall waterfalls in the Romsdalen. When driving from Andalsnes to Dombas (road E136):
Olmaafossen (1th waterfall on the right, one of the highest waterfall in the world)
Mongefossen (2nd waterfall at the left side, but is regulated and probably not visible)
Rangaafossen (3th waterfall at the left side, but is regulated and probably not visible)
Brurasløret,(4th waterfall at the left side, nice to see together with Gravdefossen)
Gravdefossen (5th waterfall at the left side and the most impressive waterfall)
Døntefossen
(6th waterfall at the right side, beautiful with river in foreground)
Skokagrovafossen (7th waterfall at the left side, nice if you are standing near the waterfall)
Vermafossen.(8th waterfall at the right side, much bigger then it looks like)
Kylingbruafossen (9th waterfall(s) at the right side, close to Kyling bridge, unnamed but beautiful)
Slettafossen (10th waterfall at the right side, extremely powerful waterfall in the river Rauma close to Vermafossen)
Then there are still dozens of low volume waterfalls not considered as a waterfall and small powerful waterfalls, south of Øverdalen, in and around the river Rauma.

MardalsfossenNot far from Romsdalen (Rauma) you can also drive into the Eikesdalen with the enormous Mardalsfossen. A tourist attraction, but the waterfalls are very impressive to see and the walk to the base of Mardalsfossen is very pleasant. Anyway Eikesdalen is a valley with many big waterfalls and is a visit worthwhile. There is a nice campingsite in Eikesdal, a perfect base to explore the area.
