Cascate di Fanes is one of the most impressive waterfalls of Italy with a total drop of 120 meter. There is a lower part (Cascate di Fanes di Sotto) and an upper part (Cascate di Fanes di Sopra) where you walk behind. A great experience with an awesome view.
From Cortina d’Ampezzo drive north over over road ss51 to Schluderbach. After appr. 7,5 kilometer take a left turn to a parking (gps 46.602269, 12.107296) and a narrow road (in a sharp bend in the road). The parking near the main road is small but behind the parking a trail starts to Cascate di Fanes. There are signs. There’s is also a very big parking after a hundred meter. From here a trail starts to Pian de Loa, also a possibility to go to Cascate di Fanes but that one is .
The shortest option is to take the trail from the first parking. The path runs behind the parking paralel to the main road. Shortly after the start there must be a path going right. At the end of the path go right crossing the river. Follow the trail and keep left at a junction, again crossing the river. Now the path runs to a viewpoint opposite of Cascate di Fanes. The trail along the river Fanes is popular hike and the trail is sometime challenging but the result is promising. It is appr. a 3 km (45-60 min) walk to the viewpoint (Belvedere).
From the parking, the second option is to take the trail to Pian de Loa (along road SS51). Here you can choose to take trail 10, this trail runs directly along the river Fanes and also has a great view on Cascate di Fanes from below. It is also possible to walk further west. This trail runs to the middle and upper part of Cascate di Fanes. I am not sure if it is possible to take this trail without special equipment.
In the river Rio di Fanes you will find several other waterfalls. The biggest one is Cascate Sbarco di Fanes. Another great waterfall where you can walk behind.
