Cautley Spout

Cautley Spout is the third highest waterfall in the UK with a total height of 198 meter. The waterfall is located in the Howgill Fells, near Sedberg (Cumbria) on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

From the M6 drive to the A684 to Sedberg, there keep following the road (A683) to Low Haygarth. There you already can see the lower part of Cautley Spout on the left side of the road, in the far distance. A little further, after the big white house (Cross Keys Inn), there is a small parking with small signs at the trailhead.

The trail most people follow goes to “the Calf”, a 676 meter high mountain. You can do the whole trail but to the base of the waterfall Cautley Spout it only takes a 20 minute walk (appr. 1,5 km). From the parking the walk heads over the River Rothay and then straight to Cautley Spout following Cautley Spout Beck.

The walk then proceeds steeply up the side of Cautley Spout. This is another 1,7 km. A roundtrip to the Calf is 16 km with an elevation of 550 meter.

Cautley Spout is a low volume waterfall that cascades down in small steps over 198 meter. The waterfall itself isn’t very impressive but the scenery looks very beautiful, a visit worthwhile.
