Fagrifoss
Fagrifoss is waterfall situated in Southeast Iceland near the Lakagígar region and means pretty falls.
Although Fagrifoss isn’t easy to reach it is certainly a top 10 waterfall in Iceland and one of the most beautiful waterfalls to photograph. What Fagrifoss makes so special is the shape of the water plunging down over the with moss covered rocks like a bridal veil. Fagrifoss is unique, one of its kind in the south east and certainly worthwhile to visit.
Driving west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur on ring road 1 (near Systrastapi) take the small road F206 (Lakavegur) to Laki and follow the road for 20 kilometers. The road is rugged with rivers that can be treacherous to cross if the water level rises due to lots of rain and warm weather. It is only possible to drive to Fragrifoss with a 4WD.
You will drive past Fagrifoss and you can park your car along the dust road. The view of the waterfall is best from the east side but a bit of a hike is necessary in order to get a good view.
The glacier river Geirlandsá plunges down over appr 80 meters in a beautiful mossy scene near Laki. Here was a massive eruption in 1783-1784 where the earth tore over a length of 24 km and created 120 craters where lava over 560 square kilometers was flooded.
