The Johannes wasserfall (or Johannesfall) is a gorgeous single drop waterfall, west of the village Obertauern, along road 99 (Tauernstrasse), in the region Salzburg, Austria.
When driving from Untertauern to Obertauern you see a small passage through the fence at the right side of the road (gps 47.252048, 13.508865). This is the trailhead of the short walk to the back of the Johannes wasserfall. Park your car at the left side of the road, opposite of the passage.
In 2 minutes you are standing at the top of the Johannes wasserfall. A nice view but it gets better when climbing down on the stairs to the back of the waterfall. Don’t forget to stop to take some pictures from aside with the mountains in the background, a superb shot. It is also nice to take a shot with somebody standing behind the waterfall. Now you see how big it is.
Walk further to the back of the waterfall to take some more shots through the water. Enjoy the massive rocks on which the water falls, a nice spectacle.
The Johannes wasserfall is a waterfall with a single drop of 38 meters and is very impressive to see. Most figures speak of a total height of 60 meters, but this is then a part you can’t see…
Late spring and early summer the flow of the river Taurach can be very powerful, a good time to visit the Johannes wasserfall. Best time of the day to visit the Johannes wasserfall is in the afternoon when the sun reaches the waterfall.
I visited the Johannes wasserfall twice, one time early summer and one time late July. In May 2006 there was to much snow to get a good view on the waterfall, but still nice to see. July 2020 I was enchanted by the beauty of this single drop waterfall, one of my favorites in Austria.
Nearby (a few kilometers north on road 99) there is another nice waterfall called Gnadenfall. Also worthwhile to visit, although the height is less then the Johannes wasserfall, but visiting waterfalls is always fun.
