Sefinenfall

The Sefinenfall is one of the many waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnental located near Stechelberg in the region Berner Oberland, Switzerland.

Driving from Interlaken to the Lauterbrunnen tal (valley) you can’t miss the Staubbachfall. To see the Sefinenfall you have to drive further into the Lauterbrunnen valley, passing the Trummelbachfall to Stechelberg. At the end of the road at Stechelberg the Sefinenfall is located at the right side of the valley. Here you also can park your car (gps 46.545389, 7.901761).

A short walk leads to a viewpoint where you can see the powerful Sefinenfall (in the early summertime). The Sefinenfall is located in the lower part of the river Sefinen Lütschine. Here the water cascades down over several small stages and one big waterfall of approximately 40 meters.

A little further upstream the river, the Sefine Lütschine has another great single drop. Take the trail at the left side (south side) of the river for the waterfalls. There are three waterfalls!

There is also a trail along the right side of the river that leads to the end of the Sefinental with great views at the end. You can take the trail for the waterfalls and then cross the river a little further up the mountain.

The Sefinenfall is being fed with melted snow and ice from some small glaciers at the mountains Birg and Gspaltenhorn (3.436 m) and Sefinahoren (2.976 m). Early summer there is still a lot of snow on the mountains and with warm weather this is the perfect period to visit the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Undoubtedly the Lauterbrunnen valley is the number 1 valley for waterfalls in Switzerland. Lauterbrunnen means “only sources” which refers to the meany streams coming down the mountains. There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley from which Staubbachfall and Trummelbachfall (in a cave) are the most famous ones.

Also the highest waterfall in Switzerland are located in the Lauterbrunnen valley: SpissbachfallStaldenbachfallMürrenbachfall and Staubbachfall.

In the Lauterbrunnen valley there are many other waterfalls (72) but my favorite are: SefinefallTalbachfallHoldrifalleSchmadribachfall (tip), Trummelbachfalle (tip), SpissbachfallMürrenbachfall.

Besides chasing waterfalls the Lauterbrunnen valley is a perfect base for hikes, paragliding or skydiving. The year 2005 was the last time I was in the Lauterbrunnen valley and the pictures I took where still analog. Visiting Switzerland again stands high on my wishlist but Switzerland is also the most expensive country in Europe. Nevertheless it is also one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.
