Strútsfoss is a tall waterfall with a height of 120 meters in the east of Iceland, located near the lake Lagarfljót (Egilsstaðir). The river Strútsá drops down the mountains over 2 stages.

From Egilsstadir take road 1>931 to Hallormsstadhur. Follow the lake and keep south of the lake taking road 933 (Fljótsdalsvegur). After 7,7 kilometer go left onto road 935, towards the farm Sturluflöt. The dust road ends after approximately 12 kilometer (gps 64.925775, -15.059440), just for the farm Sturluflöt. From here you probably can see Strútsfoss in the far distance.

From the farm Sturluflöt it is 20-30 minute walk until you see the marvelous Strútsfoss closer falling down in the river Strútsá.

Strútsfoss is located where the river Strútsá falls into the Villingadalur arm of Suðurdalur valley. The upper part of the Strútsfoss is 20 meters high and the lower part 100 meters.

Strúts refers to the pyramidal rocks in the gorge. Strútsgil is a gorge full of coloured layers basalt and sediment. The sediment is often red or yellow-brown.

Next to the Strútsfoss another river, the Innri-Þverá, falls into the gorge in a series of cascades.

There are several waterfalls in the area, but the biggest and most famous is located near the bridge over the Lagarfljót. Here you can find two of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland: Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss.
