Thjofafoss (Þjórsárdalur)
(Þjófafoss)
Thjofafoss or Þjófafoss is a gorgeous waterfall with a beautiful contrast in colors. The water is blue and the background/mountains are black. A guarantee for great pictures.
Thjofafoss is located east of Selfoss in an area with lots of great waterfalls, near mount Búrfell, in the south of Iceland.
From Selfoss take road 1 to the east and take the exit left to road 26 (Landvegur) for 44 kilometers. There is a sideroad (4 kilometer) going to the waterfall, but maybe only suitable for 4WD cars. Thjofafoss is located 20 kilometers before the junction with road 32.
The river Þjórsá drops down over a wide of appr 20 meters with mount Búrfell in the background. Thjofafoss means “waterfall of the thieves”. The story goes that thieves where drowned here for their crimes.
