Cascade de Lutour

(Cascade de Cauterets, Cascade du Lutour)

Cascade de Lutour (sometimes written as Cascade du Lutour) or Cascade de Cauterets is a fantastic waterfall which belongs in my top ten of most beautiful waterfalls in the French Pyrenees, and there a lot of waterfalls in the Pyrenees.

Cascade de Lutour (Cascade de Cauterets) is the most famous and the most touristic waterfall of the many waterfalls around Cauterets. There are over a dozen waterfalls in the direct area of Cauterets.

The small village of Cauterets is situated in the French Pyrenees, south of Lourdes and south of Argeles Gazost. Cascade de Lutour (Cascade de Cauterets) is located 2 kilometers south of Cauterets, along road D920. It is almost impossible to miss the waterfall.

In summertime it can be a little bit crowded and there are several parking lots. From the parking it is a few minutes until you see Cascade de Lutour (Cascade de Cauterets) in all its glory. The river Gave de Lutour thunders down over 140 meters (measured at my trip).

From the parking it is possible to walk up to the waterfall over an easy trail, also suitable for children. Best time to visit the waterfall is early in the season when temperatures are rising and there is still enough snow to melt.

Cascade de Lutour (Cascade de Cauterets) falls a little bit to the northwest, so for photographing the afternoon is the best time to visit this amazing waterfall.

Another nice waterfall near Cauterets is cascade du Pont d’Espagne, also a visit worthwhile
