Mogafoss

(Mögáfoss, Fjaðrárgljúfur)

Fjarðarárgljúfur is the name of a canyon in the Southeast of Iceland not far from Kirkjubæjarklaustur. There you can find a beautiful unnamed waterfall which is hard to believe. This is certainly one waterfall which in terms of volume, height and beauty belongs to my top 10 of Icelandic waterfalls. The Mögáfoss (the name I gave it and is named after the river Mögá) is a side river of the Fjaðra and can be viewed from above which gives a nice perspective.

Beside the beautiful Fjarðarárgljúfur waterfalls the canyon itself is worth to be visited. The canyon has height up to 100 meters and is 2 kilometers long. The canyon was created by erosion, because of the melting water of the In the river Fjarðará, which runs through the canyon

Fjarðarárgljúfur is not far from the main ring road 1 and the dust road is in good condition. Once there you can park the car and walk along the canyon all the way to the top.

Take road no. 1 from Selfoss direction Höfn. Just before arriving at Kirkjubæjarklaustur take exit to road no. F206 to Lakagígjar for 3.5 kilometers. After a few minutes the road to Laki leads to the right. Do not take the right turn to Laki, instead you should continue the drive a little bit furthers until you reach Fjaðrárgljúfur.
