Cascade de Clairefontaine
Cascade de Clairefontaine is a nice and scenic waterfall that most of the time is covered with moss. With an estimated height of 10 meter it is maybe not the largest waterfall in France but certainly a very photogenic one. The waterfall is located just outside Virieu-le-Grand in the region Ain, France.
From Lyon it is a 90 minute drive (100 kilometer) to Virieu-le-Grand. There is a small parking in the centre of the village (gps 45.848445, 5.649204) from where you can start. The hike to Cascade de Clairefontaine is easy and will take 30 minutes (1,5 kilometer). From the parking walk north>west to ‘Pont de Fiaciller’. Keep left until you reach the viewpoint on Cascade de Clairefontaine. If you don’t like walking you can drive closer to the waterfall and then try to park your car somehwere along the road.
I like it when there is some water in the waterfall but that the moss is clearly visible. With some sunshine you can make some nice pictures! Unfortunately it is prohibited to swim in the pool in front of the waterfall….
