Cascade de Moulin Marquis
Cascade de Moulin Marquis is a low volume waterfall but is one of the largest waterfalls in France. The waterfall is located at the Cirque du Bournillon in the Vercors, Rhone Alpes/Isere.
Cascade de Moulin Marquis can be found along road D531, 17 kilometers west of Villard the Lance. From Villard de Lans drive to Chorance. Just for Chorance there is an exit with a sign “Grotte de Choranche” (gps 45.063803, 5.426363). On the left side of the road you hopefully can see Cascade de Moulin Marquis.
Most of the time you hardly see the waterfall flowing but it still is an official named waterfall and one of the highest waterfalls in France.
You can drive a little more towards the base of the waterfall when taking the exit “Centrale hydro-électrique de Bournillon”. This exit is a few hundred meters towards Chorance.
Probably Cascade de Moulin Marquis is the highest single drop waterfall of France with a single drop of appr. 400 metrs.
The origin of Cascade de Moulin Marquis lies below the cave Grotte de Gaulois where the water comes straight out of the mountains. There is also a small waterfall located in the cave. The average volume of the river Bournillon is 3,8 m3 per second.
