Cascata del Varone
Cascata del Varone is an extraordinary waterfall flowing through a cave. The waterfall of Varone is located north of Riva del Garda, near Tenno in the region Trentino – Alto Adige (Südtirol).
Parco Grotta Cascata del Varone is located near Tenno, 3 kilometer from Riva del Garda, along road 421 on the way to Ponte Arche. Just before Tenno follow the signs for Parking Varone (gps 45.912166, 10.837126). It can’t miss.
You have to pay an entrance fee of €6 for an adult but there are family tickets. Parco Grotta Cascata del Varone is open all year around during daytime.
Cascata del Varone has a height of almost 100 meters, and is sourced from the river Magnone, which runs beneath the valley of Ravizze and down to Lake Garda. Its waters are fed by underground leakage from Lake Tenno into the mountain that then forms the waterfall. The name Varone has its origin from the town of Varone a short distance away.
Cascata del Varone was opened to the public on 20 June 1874. Patrons were the King of Saxony and Prince Nicholas of Montenegro, who were near Riva del Garda on holiday. Since then it has become a must-see for all tourists.
Cascata del Varone can be viewed (payed) from several observation point. In the lower cave you will see the bottom of the fall. In the upper cave you will see the upper part of Cascata del Varone with a height of 40 meters. The caves are over 10 thousand years old and were formed by the Garda glacier.
A little north of cascata del Varone you will find another nice waterfall, cascata di Ballino. It is only a 12 km drive to Ballino where the waterfall is located at the left side of the road. Go left at the church and park the car at the a small parking near the dustbins. A short walk brings you to cascata di Ballino.
In the lower cave you will see the bottom of the fall.
