Dyrdalsfossen

Dyrdalsfossen is an unknown but beautiful waterfall in the Dyrdalen, near Eidsdal, in the region More og Romsdal, Norway.

Steiggjelselva on my way to DyrdalsfossenOn my way to Muldalsfossen I went into the supermarket for bread and I just missed the ferry. I knew there was an unknown waterfall nearby so I decided to check out this mysterious waterfall called Dyrdalsfossen.

From Eidsdal drive to Norddal along the Norddalsfjorden (road Fv91). In Norddal go right after crossing the river at the supermarket (Joker). Follow the road for 2,2 kilometer. Cross the bridge and drive straight ahead (keeping a little bit left) to several hytter (rentals). Drive further until you see Dyrdalsfossen after a few hundred meter.

DyrdalsfossenDyrdalsfossen isn’t hard to find if you look in the right direction. Dyrdalsfossen is already visible from a far distance but I was looking to the left side of the valley because I saw some water falling. Suddenly I saw a big waterfall at the right side of the valley, now it was easy to approach the waterfall.

There was no traffic and a parking was difficult to find, so I parked the car somewhere at the road. Afterwards I realized I was at the lower part of Dyrdalsfossen, but this was already a nice waterfall. You can walk towards the base to get a closer look. Open the fence and you will feel the power of the waterfall.

The lower part of Dyrdalsfossen ia appr. 90 meter high but in total the river Dyrdola drops down over 220 meter. The average volume of the river Dyrdola is 1.46 m3/s. Unfortunately there are plans to built a power plant which will reduce the waterflow or maybe this waterfall won’t exist anymore in a few years time.

When I drove back I stopped a couple of times to look at all of Dyrdalsfossen. Now I could see how tall and powerful Dyrdalsfossen actually is.

Geirangerfjorden kayak at Dei Sju SystreneDyrdalsfossen is close to the Geirangerfjorden, a perfect base for day trips, hikes or boat trips. I can recommend the ferry Geiranger-Hellesylt. It wasn’t cheap but again (fourth time) I enjoyed the boat trip. It can be cold because of the wind, so take a jacket with you. If you are with more then two people you also can rent a boat at Grande camping in Geiranger. In two hour time you can make your own trip and it really fun, certainly with children.

A lot of people take their fishing rod with them when renting a boat. It is allowed to fish freely on sea (fjord) and there is a lot of fish in the fjord. Nice for the bbq! I am not really fund of fishing so I bought Salmon in the supermarket (quit cheap in Norway).

It always nice to know which waterfalls there are in the Geirangerfjorden. From Geiranger the first waterfall you see at the right side (after the camping site) is Gjerdefossen.

A little bit further at the right side you will see Bringefossen. Here you already can see Dei Sju Systrene (Seven Sisters waterfall). Look at the right side of the top of the waterfalls. Here you can see the Knivsfla farm(s). On the other side of the fjord you can see Friaren waterfall (also called Skågeflafossen).

Sju Systre, Seven Sisters, Dei Sju SystreneAfter Dei Sju Systrene you will see a low volume waterfall at the right side of the Geirangerfjorden called Brudesløret (Bridal veil) and on the opposite side of the Geirangefjorden you see  Ljosurfossen. There are still many named and unnamed waterfall in the Geirangerfjord but these are the significant ones.

Off cause at Hellesylt you will see the Hellesyltfossen. After the ferry arrives in Hellesylt you still have 10 minutes to visit the waterfall.
