Cascade de la Queue de Cheval
Cascade de la Queue de Cheval is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Haut Jura (France) not far from the picturesque village of Saint Claude.
From Saint Claude drive east to Chaumont (D304). In Chaumont you will see signs for “Cascade de la Queue de Cheval”. Park the car at the parking (gps 46.388451, 5.886059).
From the parking walk back the road (to the house) and take the path left (going east – gps 46.388168, 5.885643). When the path stops go right at the trees. There is a small wooden signs “Cascade”. Follow the path and keep right. After 15-20 minutes (1 kilometer) you have reached the base of Cascade de la Queue de Cheval.
Cascade de la Queue de Cheval has two drops with a total height of 60 meters and a single drop of appr 40 meters. A perfect place to play, swim, cool down and to enjoy summertime.
The waterfall is also visible from a sideroad of the D40, east of Rochefort (gps 46.377004, 5.881873). Here you see Cascade de la Queue de Cheval from a far distance.
In summertime the waterflow in the river is reduced but still with enough water to see a nice waterfall. Late spring or after a rainy period is a good time to see a more powerful Cascade de la Queue de Cheval.
There are many other nice waterfalls in the Jura but my all time favorite are cascades du Herisson, a series of waterfalls within a few kilometer. The most beautiful one is called “le Grand Saut“.
