Cascata di Ferrera – Cascata Fermona
Cascata di Ferrera and Cascata Fermona are two gorgeous waterfalls in the pittoreske village of Ferrera di Varese in the region Lombardia, Italy. There is also a third (smaller waterfall) downstream from cascata di Ferrera, but this one has no name.
There is a parking near the trailhead to bot waterfalls at gps 45.93543, 8.78692. If this one is full there might be a parking at the school or at a bigger carpark at gps 45.934030, 8.784706.
From the first parking in Ferrera di Varese it is only a short walk to the first waterfall, cascata di Ferrera. The path is marked and it is easy to find. After5 minutes you reach the small waterfall (3 meter high), but it is a nice place to picnic.
Now cross the bridge and a little further descend down (over stairs) to the big waterfall, Cascata Fermona. You can reach the base of the waterfall in 10 minutes from cascata di Ferrera. This one is much more impressive and people love to spend some time sunbathing. But bring your water shoes with you. On bare foot crossing the river isn’t very pleasant!! I forgot my water shoes in the summer of 2024 and my feet didn’t like the small rocks in the water…..
Cascata Fermona is a scenic spot where the river Margorabbia jumps into a really wonderful pool, the perfect place to swim and to take some really nice photo’s. several people where making a photoshoot in front of the waterfall. The waterfall had a single drop of 30 meters (measured) but it looks higher.
After heavy rainfall Cascata di Ferrera/Cascata Fermona turns into an aggressive monster where you can feel the power of the water. In summertime there are periods with extreme heavy showers, a perfect time to visit the waterfall (at least when in it dry again).
The waterfall are located near Luino (lago Maggiore) and you can combine it with a visit to the big market on Wednesday in Luino!
